Chapter 11

As her muscles tensed to spring upward at the agent and his gun, Brent swayed on his knees and grabbed her arm. “I—I don’t feel so good.” It seemed like he was just steadying himself, but Emily couldn’t help but wonder if he’d anticipated what she’d been about to do and moved to stop her.

“Yeah, you said that before.” Scorpion snorted above them.

Brent swayed again, this time knocking into the other agent’s knees with his shoulder. Scorpion stumbled slightly, and in that split second, Brent shot forward with no warning. He hit Scorpion in a waist-level football tackle, knocking him back and using his outstretched hands to push the gun upward.

Emily stumbled back.

Brent and Scorpion struggled, grunting as they fought for control of the gun. Emily winced at the sound of a fist striking flesh. That certainly didn’t sound the same as it did in the movies. Without warning, the gun went off and she involuntarily screamed and clapped her hand over her ears—too late.

For a moment, she worried someone—Brent in particular—had gotten shot, but then she saw the freshly raw place on a nearby tree trunk and realized the shot had been wild and accidental and aimed at nothing in particular.

“Emily, get down!” Brent yelled raggedly.

Good point. If another shot like that goes off, I don’t want to be an accidental target.

She hit the ground and slithered backward through the semi-dry grass along the bank of the creek. From her new angle, she couldn’t see as well what was going on. After what seemed like an eternity, something changed and Brent was holding the gun. Scorpion was flipped onto his stomach, Brent bending the man's arm back at an awkward angle. He slipped the zip-ties onto the man and then pulled them tight.

He straightened and glanced around, wiping his glistening face with the back of his hand. Emily rose from where she’d gone prone in the grass.

“You okay?” he asked, spotting her.

“I’m fine,” she said, brushing off the front of her shirt. “You don’t look so good, though.”

“Be nice!”

Emily shook her head and approached. “You’re already back to joking after that fight of the century?”

“Oh that was hardly the fight of the century,” Brent said, grunting as he flipped Scorpion over and frowned down at him. “You’re not very highly-trained, are you.”

Emily raised an eyebrow and looked more closely at the rogue agent. He had made an awful lot of strange decisions and weird blunders. She could tell, and she wasn’t even a highly-trained agent herself.

“I’m surprised you were tasked with information gathering about the 10,000. What did you say your department and clearance level were?” Brent folded his arms across his chest, still holding the other man’s gun. “It’s my turn to ask the questions now, Agent Scorpion.”

The man rolled his eyes and didn’t say anything.

Brent raised both eyebrows. “Well, you don’t seem too talkative all of a sudden. Emily, help me get him up?”

She approached the man gingerly, hoping he was rendered harmless by the recycled zip-ties.
